![]() Oh, and if all that wasn’t enough: the locations could have done with a bit more variety, and the gameplay itself is a bit short. For example, there’s a stealth section that you use once for a few minutes and then forget about it, and there’s the wall running, which we saw in Mirror’s Edge, for example, that was only used a few times. It is sometimes prone to glitches (and I would point out that Bright Memory: Infinite, I’ll shorten it to Bright Memory: Infinite from here on out, is quite buggy), and it’s no coincidence that the PC version got a six out of ten rating around the press in average, as it shows up as being underdeveloped in several aspects. ![]() I last saw this in the FPSs of a Polish budget studio, Silden. Watching the last opponent in the area die in slow motion will be unnerving. There are five firearms, and in addition to their main attack, they also have special ammo, and you can use the Bionic Commando-like bionic arm to pull your opponents to you… or at least a small portion of them. Devil May Cry? Yeah, maybe similar to that, but Zeng couldn’t compete with the level of DMCV. In the fights, however, it’s a great idea to switch from shooting to using the katana during a combo. There’s a black hole and some time-travel stuff (which makes it possible to replay earlier chapters, which is not bad), and Chen’s occasional voiceover is not a well-developed story. The story itself is so untraceable, yet so superficial, that it is perhaps unprecedented. It’s a fast-paced game starring Shelia, a supernaturally-gifted girl who works for a government company called SRO (Science Research Organization) and is given a mission by Director Chen: she needs to take out a military organization called SAI before it finds an ancient power that can raise the dead. ![]() Since the game has been available on PC since November, I’ll briefly dive into the gist. Most people in Dawson welcomed the changes, but those in the Territorial Council who had benefited from the earlier laxity and corruption had influence in Ottawa. Steele recognized that attempting to prohibit drinking, gambling and prostitution would be futile, so he regulated it, imposing strict closing hours on bars, including all day on Sundays. Of royalties, processes miners had complained were corrupt. Steele arranged for the police to take over the issuance of mining licences and the collection Introduced regulations that cleaned up the town and brought a typhoid epidemic under control. Moving to Dawson City in the summer, Steele was appointed as a member of the Territorial Council as well as licence commissioner and chair of the board of health for Dawson. Travelling to Skagway, Alaska, in January 1898, Steele organized customs posts on the Chilkoot and White passes and introduced regulations requiring incoming miners to bring adequate food supplies to prevent starvation. International press criticism of the chaotic situation there resulted in Sam Steele’s appointment to command a large contingent of 250 NWMP in the territory. Large gold discoveries in the Yukon in 1896 caught the Canadian government completely unprepared ( see Klondike Gold Rush). The division returned to Fort Macleod in the summer of 1888, and Steele commanded that post, the largest outside NWMP headquarters in Regina, Steele’s men built Fort Steele on the Kootenay River, and he resolved the situation through patient diplomacy with Chief Isadore. Not only a book of action, it’s a thought-provoking tale that glories in the good, the true, and the beautiful. Beautiful scenes of home, purpose in one’s work, and loyalty are deepened by the honest depictions of exile, the consequences of treachery, bitterness, and fighting for one’s home. The styling, character arcs, pacing, and imagery are all artful and compelling. (And I hope we get better acquainted with Picket and Heather’s parents in a future book!) The whole book is a gem I can’t wait to share with my children someday. I also love the importance placed on craftsmanship, the necessity of art, and everyone’s skill having weight within the community. Some of my favorite characters and imagery included Heather the budding Storyteller, Smalls, the Gardens, Maggie O’Sage, “The Mended Wood,” the stained glass windows(!!), Uncle Wilfred’s faithfulness, Emma’s journey to becoming a doctor, and of course the flaming crown jewel, the Green Ember. Rumors of a coming attack from the wolves, the unsettled longing for King Jupiter’s heir to rise, and the whole community’s yearning for their true home all collide into a test of loyalty and character. While finding their place in the community, Heather and Picket’s family connections add to the rising tension in the warren. Smith has given us a tale that will make us cry, cheer, and fist pump when events turn and battles are won. Where are the all books about heroic acts and brave deeds? Why have we stopped feeding our children stories of brave knights and daring princesses? Few tales have been produced since the days of Tolkien, Lewis, & MacDonald that reveal the endurance of the human (or rabbit) spirit, tales that demonstrate the strength that always arises from a fallen people and a broken nation. |
